One of the more imaginative events organised to mark the opening of the new John Muir Way saw groups of walkers from both Helensburgh and Balloch converge on Goukhill to witness a meeting between John Muir and Tom Weir against the spectacular backdrop of Loch Lomond.
Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs Trustee, John Urquhart said: ''This was a very special event which took place in sparkling sunshine with the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond looking at their magical best as the two famous conservationists and champions of National Parks held the crowd spellbound with their conversation on their lifetime work promoting the benefits of the great outdoors and the concept of National Parks to protect wild and beautiful places. Many of those who were present described the event as a very moving and inspirational experience.'' John is also a Trustee of ACT.
Actor David Kinnaird of Stirling Ghostwalk fame played the part of John Muir and Donald Nelson, storyteller, was Tom Weir. Organised by the Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs as part of the John Muir Festival and funded by Argyll and Bute Council, the National Park and Helensburgh and Gareloch Rotary, all proceeds went to the Tom Weir Memorial Statue Campaign.
