Access

Its one thing saying we should all ‘get on our bikes’ and ditch our cars for a healthier and more environmentally friendly alternative to travel.
Giving You Access
But it’s another thing entirely if we don’t have efficient paths and route that are easy to find and use. We are committed to working with Argyll and Bute Council’s Access team, Scotways, Paths for All, Sustrans and other local organisations to keep the path network well maintained and effectively promoted.
Here’s a few reason’s why:
- Walking and cycling are therefore realistic alternatives for around one third of car journeys in Scotland today (Transport Scotland estimate that approximately 34% of all car journeys in Scotland are less than two miles in length).
- The health benefits of undertaking regular physical activities such as walking cycling, running etc. are well documented both in terms of physical health and mental well-being. Having a good network of paths that are fit for purpose and easy to find and use will encourage people of all ages to regularly use the network which in turn will help to create healthier, stronger and greener communities.
- If we have a good path network that is used, both local businesses and individuals will benefit tangible economic benefits. A recent report by Scottish Natural Heritage stated that the value to the economy of walking tourism is £533 million per year – so there is a demand for both functional and recreational paths that are well promoted and fit for purpose.
How we act*…
Here are some of the key areas we are aiming to assist in:
- Better signage and parking facilities at the core paths and launching points and working with communities to help realise improvements to their local path networks and launching points.
- The development of the new Argyll Kayak Trail from Helensburgh to Lochgilphead - a wonderful asset that will attract many kayakers to Argyll and the Isles and has the potential to extend to other areas within Argyll over time.
- Scotland’s Great Trails - The West Highland Way, The Kintyre Way, The West Island Way, the Three Lochs Way the Cowal Way and the new John Muir Way running from Dunbar to Helensburgh. These fantastic routes require to be regularly maintained, signed and promoted to ensure they remain well used. A lot of this work is currently undertaken by volunteers and could benefit through better networking opportunities and strategic approach - we hope, with support, to assist this.
*act is still in its infancy and some actions detailed here are still in planning phases and not yet active. However it is our sole intention to get these projects up and running as soon as possible – and when we do, you’ll be the first to know.
How you can act….
Get on your bike!! Literally! Or don your trainers or walking shoes instead of picking up your car keys. It’s a much more enjoyable way to travel – you’ll feel healthier, have more time to enjoy the scenery and you’ll also save money! You can also help us by making a donation and/or becoming a member, friend or business supporter. You’ll get to voice your opinions and you’ll always be kept in the loop with how we act and who we act with. You can even suggest a project to us. We’d love that.! Find out more here.
