Biodiversity and Natural Heritage
Did you know that according to experts, Argyll and the Isles is considered to be a biodiversity hot spot with some of the best examples of Land, Freshwater and Marine and Coastal Habitats and Species in the UK?
Variety is the spice of life….
And biodiversity is the variety of all living things. Some say biodiversity is like a well-oiled machine - with each part, our habitats and species having an interdependence and a function to sustain us. There are no spare parts in biodiversity, everything has a purpose. We have some of the ‘best examples of biodiversity in Britain’. Our range of habitats and species has not only earned us this accolade but also makes us a hotspot for some of the UK’s key species.
How we act*…
We’ll provide advice on biodiversity and, where appropriate, work with project groups to assist them with project development, identifying possible funding streams and facilitating project delivery.
We’ll specifically encourage local people to participate in biodiversity and natural heritage conservation - by working with partners to educate and raise awareness about our habitats, species, geology and raising awareness of the impacts of their loss. This may include practical activities such as surveying and monitoring or making improvements to our lifestyles and environments. We aim for these efforts to enhance, create and restore natural heritage features including habitats in order to benefit a wide variety of species and in turn, help to conserve our ecosystems.
An ecosystem is a community of plants, animals and smaller organisms that live, feed, reproduce and interact in the same area or environment, e.g. Farmland, Woodland etc
*act is still in its infancy and some actions detailed here are still in planning phases and not yet active. However it is our sole intention to get these projects up and running as soon as possible – and when we do, you’ll be the first to know.
